SOUTH BEND - Sister M. Melissa Connolly, CSC, 83, of Saint Mary's Convent, died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness. Sister M. Melissa as born June 23, 1910, in Lowell, Mass., as Gertrude Anna Connolly.

She entered the Congregation of Sisters of the Holy Cross on Sept. 8, 1940; received as a novice on Aug. 15, 1941; and professed her vows on Aug. 15, 1943. She was assigned to teaching in elementary schools in Washington, Maryland, Virginia, and Texas. She is survived by two sisters, Helena Heafy and Rita Wesson, both of Lowell.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's. Burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Monday in the church, where a wake will be said at 7 p.m. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
