Jack L. Comegys
Sept. 4, 1918 - June 1, 2002
Jack Leland Comegys, 83, residing on Scenic View Drive, Niles, Mich., died at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, June 1, in the Battle Creek Veterans Administration Medical Center, Battle Creek, Mich., where he had been a patient for eight days.
He was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Des Moines, Iowa, as the son of DeLonia "Lon" and Sarah (Slack) Comegys, and had lived in the South Bend-Niles area since he was 16 years old. He retired in 1981 as general foreman with A.M. General Corporation, and had previously worked at the Studebaker Corporation for 26 years.
On June 30, 1940, in South Bend, Ind., he married Lucille M. Griffin. He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Lucille; and a son and daughter-in-law, Lyle and Gail Comegys of Mishawaka; five grandchildren, Bryon Comegys, Rachel Main, Jeffrey Keiser, Scott Keiser and Robin Comegys; two great-grandchildren, Heather Comegys and Nicole Main; two sisters, Florence Smith and Betty Jo Zwickl, both of South Bend; and three brothers, Edward (Marjorie) Comegys of South Bend, Lonnie "Bud" (Jean) Comegys of Bradenton, Fla., and Robert (Dionne) Comegys of Tampa, Fla.
Mr. Comegys served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps, and received the Purple Heart for injuries at Iwo Jima.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Todd Lotridge will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Southlawn Cemetery where members of V.F.W. Post 360, Mishawaka, will conduct military rites.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Palmer Funeral Home.
