Robert E. Coddens

March 1, 1926 - March 13, 1998

SOUTH BEND - Robert E. Coddens, 72, of South Bend, Ind., passed away at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 13, in his residence.  He was the former owner of Bob's Barber Shop and Superior Brake, and was also a co-owner of Thermalite, Inc.

Mr. Coddens was born on March 1, 1926, in Mishawaka, Ind., and was a lifelong area resident. On May 4, 1946, in South Bend, he married Amelia Miller, who survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Douglas (Deborah) Coddens and Dean (Peggy) Coddens; three grandsons, Sean Alan of Grand Rapids, Mich., Joshua Adam and Zachary Alexander; two brothers, Richard and Donald Coddens; a sister, Dorothy Conely; and by many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Coddens was preceded in death by his parents, Camiel and Valentine (Meert) Coddens.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where Sean Coddens, Joshua Coddens, Zachary Coddens, Chris Johnson, Ray Johnson and Gary Johnson will serve as pallbearers. Al Laureys, Glen Robinson, Raymond DeBates, Kenneth Coddens, Richard Coddens, Sr., Richard Coddens, Jr., Donald Coddens and Malcum Tuesley will serve as honorary pallbearers.

A committal service will be held by Deacon Joseph Illes, followed by military services conducted by American Legion Post 297 in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today and one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home.

Mr. Coddens was a member of the basketball team and a 1944 graduate of New Carlisle High School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1167, American Legion Post 297, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 58, Polish National Alliance and the Bowlers Country Club.
