George J. Chikar

SOUTH BEND - George J. Chikar, 80, of
West Indiana Avenue, South Bend, Ind., passed away in his home at
8:10 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, after an illness. Mr. Chikar had
been employed by the former Claey's Wholesale, and had also
worked for the Calpro Fence Company. He was born on Sept. 18,
1916, in South Bend.
On June 29, 1946, in South Bend, he married
Anne Marie Vegh, who survives. He is also survived by a
daughter, Georgeanne C. Whelan of Granger, Ind.; four
granddaughters, Christine Whelan, Michelle Whelan, Colleen
Whelan, Elizabeth Whelan; and two brothers, John Chikar and
Edward Chikar, both of South Bend. He was preceded in death by a
sister, Irene Hoffman, and by a brother, Joseph Chikar. Mr.
Chikar was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Disabled
American Veterans. He was a World War II Army veteran.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday in Our
Lady of Hungary Catholic Church, with Rev. Thaddeus Kwak
presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park,
Granger. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday in the
Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble, where the St. Ann Society
will recite a rosary at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made
to Hospice of St. Joseph County, to the Holy Name Church Repair
Fund, or to the charity of donor's choice.
