Carol Chikar

Carol Chikar, 58, of Vistula Road,
Osceola, Ind., passed away in her home at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, March
31, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Carol was born in
Mishawaka on Dec. 3, 1943, to the late Alphons A. and Irene C. (Burggraf)
Lippens.
On July 29, 1967, in St. Monica Church,
Mishawaka, Ind., Carol married Joseph Chikar, who survives. She
is also survived by a daughter, Amy Irene Chikar of Osceola; a
son, Joseph Jared Chikar of Mishawaka; a sister, Barbara Sayers
of Hudson, Ohio; and by a brother, Ronald C. Lippens of
Mishawaka.
Teaching for the past 27 years, Carol spent
the last 15-plus years in the Fairfield Community School
Corporation where she served as an art teacher for grades 1
through 6, mainly at the Millersburg and New Paris schools. Carol
graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington where she also
received her master's degree in art education. She was a member
of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the South Bend Art Center
where she continued to take art classes. Carol loved to cook,
read, work with ceramics, jewelry, and sew, specializing in
making quilts. She loved all aspects of the outdoors including
fishing, camping and nature in general. Her favorite charity
through the years had been the Homeless Center in South Bend.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9
p.m. on Thursday, April 4, in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral
Home, Mishawaka, where a wake service will be held at 4 p.m. A
funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, April 5, in
Queen of Peace Church, Mishawaka, with Fr. Elden Miller
officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County or to the American Cancer Society. Carol will be truly missed by her many friends, colleagues and students she has touched throughout the years. Her family also gratefully acknowledges her for the loving and tender care she gave her mother during her final years.
