SOUTH BEND
Edmund Joseph Chartier Sr., 81, of Bay Head NJ, formerly of South
Bend, died Friday, August 24, in Northfield IL. Edmund was
a self-employed manufacturers representative in the
plastics industry his entire career.
He was born on
February 15, 1926, in South Bend, to Harry J. and Catherine
(Loughran) Chartier, who preceded him in death. Edmund
lived in South Bend for 23 years and in New Jersey for the last
18 years. He married Dorothy Ann Rule on Mary 1, 1954, in
Metuchen NJ, who survives along with a daughter, Michelle (Paul)
Laughlin of Northfield IL, two sons, Edmund Chartier Jr of
McHenry IL, and Peter (Joyce) Chartier of Ingleside IL; three
grandchildren: Paul, Anne and Erin Laughlin; a sister, Marion
(William) Bickel of South Bend; and a brother, Alfred (Georgeann)
Chartier of South Bend. Two sisters, Virginia Krauss and
Mary Grace Mecklenburg preceded him in death.
Edmund was
president of Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Parish, Bay Head
NJ, and a member of the Legion of Mary, Lector, Eucharistic
Minister and choir member of the following parishes: Corpus
Christi, South River NJ; St Bartholomew, East Brunswick NJ; St
Thomas Becket, Mt. Prospect IL; and most recently at Sacred Heart
Parish, Bay Head NJ. Edmund graduated from John Adams High
School, South Bend, and the University of Notre Dame, class of
1949, and was a World War II veteran serving with the Naval Air
Corp.
Mass of Christian
Burial will be at 9:30am Thursday, August 30, in the Basilica of
the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus. Entombment will
follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame. There will be
no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
memorials be made to Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Hospice, PO
Box 1006, Skokie IL 60076-8006. The Hickey Funeral Home,
South Bend 574-289-1000, is in charge of arrangements.
