Hubert O. Cates, formerly of South
Bend and Mishawaka, died May 18, after a lengthy illness in
Whispering Pines Nursing Center, New Port Richey, Fla. Mr. Cates
was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Mississippi to John & Ethel Cates.
On July 22, 1939, in Boulivar County, Miss.,
he married Minnie (Jackie) Petrie. They moved to South
Bend in 1939 and Hubert worked first as a cook in his
brother-in-law's restaurant and later at Ball Band, which became
Uniroyal, where he worked in Plant Protection until his
retirement in 1976.
Minnie preceded him in death on Sept. 1,
1979, and he was also preceded in death by his brother, LeRoy
Cates, and sister, Gladys Besheres. On April 29, 1980 in
South Bend, he married Eunice Barnard. She survives at
their home in New Port Richey. He is also survived by his
daughter, Sandra Schiele of Niles, Mich.; grandson Roger
Schiele, Jr. of San Leandro, Calif.; two brothers, L.B. Cates and
Alton Cates, both of Cleveland, Miss.; and two sisters, Cleo Russell
of Dyersburg, Tenn., and Lena Thomas Jones of Carrollton,
Texas; and many nieces and nephews. Hubert was a 32nd degree
Mason and a member of Scottish Rite. He also enjoyed bowling,
fishing, hunting, dancing, playing cards and was an avid golfer.
There will be no visitation or funeral
service. There will be a private burial service with only family
in Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. Arrangements are
being handled by Chapel Hills Funeral Home. The family requests
that memorial gifts be made to Hospice or the charity of your
choice.
