Sister Mary Paula
CSC, 91, for 69 years a prominent figure in the progress of
St. Marys College and the University of Notre Dame, and was
one of the last survivors of Mother Angelas civil war
little band of mercy, died Wednesday afternoon in St. Marys
Convent. Although retired for about 10 years, she remained active
in the life of the community. She was born in 1836 as Wififred Casey,
and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in
1858, three years before the civil war broke out, when she joined
with the little band for the battlefields. Following the war she
became active in the progressive programs of St. Marys and
Notre Dame. Sister Mary de Sales CSC, 90, is the only
member of the civil war band that survive.
