SOUTH BEND - Emma Lou Carter, 77, of North Birdsell Street, died at 8:15 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness. Mrs. Carter was a former domestic housekeeper. She was born June 3, 1916, in Como, Miss., and lived in South Bend since 1947, coming from Indianapolis.

On April 13, 1947, in Indianapolis, as Emma Lou Brown, she married Zilford Carter. He died April 21, 1963. She is survived by a friend, John Charles Bryant of South Bend. She was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses Congregation-West.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Cremation will take. There will no visitation. Welsheimer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
