James D. Carlson

James D. Carlson, 77, of Scenic Drive in South Bend, Ind., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, in Regency Place of South Bend. Mr. Carlson was born on May 28, 1924, in Mishawaka, Ind., to the late Carl V. and Hazel J. (Stenberg) Carlson, and was a lifelong area resident. He retired as a salesman, and had been employed with Gates Chevy World, Gurley Leep Automotive Group and Jordon Ford.

 

On June 29, 1946, James married Evelyn M. Banicki, his wife of 55 years, who survives. He is also survived by a son, Jeffrey D. (Charlotte) Carlson of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Jennifer D. Ryan of Menomonee Falls, Wis., Jill D. O'Neill of South Bend and Jody D. Carlson of Indianapolis, Ind.; and by five grandchildren, Denis M. (Paula) Ryan of Woodbury, Minn., Thomas J. Ryan of St. Paul, Minn., and Jessica D. Carlson, James D. Carlson and Janina D. Carlson of Jacksonville, Fla.

 

Mr. Carlson graduated from Washington High School in 1942, and attended Purdue University until he was drafted into World War II where he served in the Army. He was a member of American Legion Post 357, was a life member of Veteran of Foreign Wars, Post 360, a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, and was a former member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and St. Patrick Catholic Church. James made the Cursillo in 1966; he was a devout Catholic.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Lodge, American Cancer Society, 1795 West 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260. Private services will take place. The Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, is in charge of arrangements.
