SOUTH BEND - Father Charles M. Carey, CSC, 90, died at 1:55 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, in Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind. Father Carey was born on Feb. 7, 1908, in Kokomo, Ind., to Cornelius and Agnes (O'Donnell) Carey.
n 1922, at the age of 14, he entered Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame. He professed his first vows on July 2, 1927, and final vows on July 2, 1931. After graduation from Notre Dame in 1931, and four years of theology at Holy Cross College, Washington, D.C., he was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1935. Two years after ordination he earned a Master's degree in English at Notre Dame.
He had lived sixty-one years at Notre Dame, during which time he served in a variety of posts, including teacher of English, associate editor of Ave Maria magazine, prefect of religion, vice-president for student affairs, assistant to the director of admissions, and counselor in the freshman year of studies. During most of that time he also lived in student residences as rector, prefect and resident. In recent years he lived in Corby Hall, and most recently in Holy Cross House where he died.
He is survived by a brother, Francis of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Jane and Ruth Carey of Kokomo, and Patricia Carey of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Schleeter of Columbus, Ohio; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Cornelius, Patrick and John; and by his sisters, Mary Helen Grace, Firma Johnson and Margaret Schleeter.
A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Moreau Seminary. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame. Burial will take place in the community cemetery, Notre Dame. Kaniewski Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
