Sister Josephine Callahan CSC
Sister Josephine Callahan (Sister Marie Patrice), CSC, 89, was born in New York, New York, to the late John and Norah Sullivan Callahan. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Johnston of East Northport, N.Y. Sister is survived by nieces, Mary Dexter of Jefferson Md., Josephine Kelly and Linda Blanco, both of East Northport N.Y., and Helen Pose of Staten Island, N.Y. Sister is also survived by many friends.
Sister Josephine entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross on July 30, 1938. She received her BA degree, with a major in English and minor in education, at St. Mary of the Wasatch College, Salt Lake City, Utah, and her M.Ed. in education and French at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
For 13 years, from 1941-1954, Sister taught in elementary schools in Ogden, Utah, Oakland, Los Angeles, San Mateo, Fresno and La Jolla, Calif. During the next 16 years, from 1954-1970, she taught in secondary schools in Los Angeles, Fresno, Downey and Ventura, Calif., Salt Lake City, Utah, Kensington Md., and Washington, D.C. Following this, she taught at Dunbarton College, Washington, D.C., from 1970-1973, after which she was a tutor at St. Joseph's High School, South Bend, Ind. In 1977 Sister returned to Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, and was active in volunteer service to her community and in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Reception of the Body and wake service will be Monday, September 4, 2006, at 4:00 p.m. in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN. The funeral service will be Tuesday, September 5, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
