In loving memory of husband and father, William H. Butler, 79, of Albert Street, South Bend, Ind., who passed away on Monday, May 3, at 10:58 p.m. in Memorial Hospital. He was born to Paul and Mabel Butler who preceded him in death. He is survived by a sister, Mari Shindledecker of Torrington, Wyoming.
On June 6, 1942, he married Iris Carter, who survives after 57 years of marriage. He is also survived by five children, Linda J. (Rick) Bell, William A. (Donna) Butler, Paula J. (Jeff) Butler, Kirk D. (Marcia) Butler and Cathy J. (Gary) Mentag. William had 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He served in the 29th Infantry Division on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. He was honored with a Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal and unit citation and also the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 30, 1945.
William retired from Uniroyal after 27 years of employment. While employed there, he enjoyed playing basketball and softball for the Uniroyal League. He also had a love for dogs and fishing. William will always be remembered for his courage, strong will and humor. His love and kindness will live forever in our hearts. We love you, Daddy.
Friends and family may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on today at the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 7th, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Hospice of St. Joseph County.
