SOUTH BEND - Loren McClain Bussert, 78, of Hendersonville, NC,
passed away on Monday, May 17, 2010, in Margaret R. Pardee
Memorial Hospital. Born in Marion, IN, he was a son of the late
Devon and Neva Bussert. Prior to moving to Henderson County, he
had resided in South Bend, IN, and Morton, IL. He graduated from
John Adams H.S. in 1949 and received a BS from Bethel College, an
MPA from John Jay College of Criminal Justice as a U.S. Justice
Department Fellow. He was also a veteran, serving in the U.S.
Army from 1952-1954. He worked at the South Bend Police
Department from 1955-1975 and was appointed Chief of Police in
1969. He was also an assistant professor at I.U.S.B. from
1975-1978, and was the corporate manager of security for
Caterpillar, Inc., from 1979-1992. He was a life member of the
International Association of Chiefs of Police, a member of the
Fraternal Order of Police and the International Security
Management Association. He was of the Methodist faith. He is
survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Artie J. Bussert of
Hendersonville, NC; two daughters, Janice Bussert-Boembeke of
Mishawaka, IN, and Rebecca L. Bussert of Black Mountain, NC; four
grandchildren, Amy L. Faulkner, Joseph Peters, Christopher
Bussert and Brice Boembeke; and one sister, Linda Venderly of Mt.
