SOUTH BEND - Elizabeth A. (Ramey) Burton, 99, a resident of
Regency Place of South Bend, passed away at Regency on Wednesday,
January 24, 2007, 41 days before her 100th birthday.
Elizabeth
"Betty" was born on March 7, 1907, to Elmer and Serena
(Hill) Ramey in Muncie, IN. She graduated from Muncie High School
in 1924 and married Floyd L. Burton on July 15, 1925, in St.
Joseph, MI, who passed away on November 14, 1982.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her brother, Clyde E. Ramey of Lombard, IL;
her sister, Uarda (Ramey) Robbins of South Bend; and her
daughter-in-law, Joan (Erhardt) Burton.
She assisted her
husband, manager of the former Grand Leader Department Store in
downtown South Bend, and then entered with him into the ownership
and management of the former Burton's Department Store,
previously located on Miami Street in South Bend. After her
husband's death, she moved to Rhode Island to live near her son
and daughter-in-law until returning to South Bend with them in
2002.
Elizabeth is
survived by their only child, Floyd L. Burton, formerly of Boston,
MA, and Providence, RI, and now a resident of South Bend; four
grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services
will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2007, in Chapel
Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, with two
hours of visitation prior to the services. Rev. David Gerth will
officiate. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens,
Osceola.
