William Slocum Burling

MISHAWAKA - William Slocum Burling, 85, of Mishawaka
passed away Thursday, January 10, 2008, in his home. He was born
on Christmas Day, December 25, 1922, in Springfield, IL, to the
late Harold and Agnes (Schweikles) Burling. After graduating from
high school, William attended and graduated from Illinois
Wesleyan College. William also served his country proudly in the
U.S. Navy.
On August 19, 1977, he married Dorothy
Arnold Peterson in Niles, MI. William retired in 1986,
after working 25 years as a claims manager for Ohio Casualty
Insurance. He was a member of the American Legion and the NRA.
William was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty Sorling;
a stepdaughter, Jennifer Jan Hively; and a stepson, Steve
Peterson. William is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy of
Mishawaka; his daughter, Stacey (Jeff Bredonburg) Burling
of Orland, PA; his son, John W. (Kathy) Burling of Monticello,
AL; his stepson, Randy (Sherry) Peterson of Granger; his sister,
Beth (Bill) Bothwick of Selmer, GA; two grandchildren; two
step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation or services. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home has assisted his family with arrangements. In loving memory of William, memorial contributions may be made to Southern Care Hospice, c/o National City Bank Bldg., 310 W. McKinley Suite 340, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
