Robert E. Burkhart, 79, residing on South 33rd Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 3:14 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.

Mr. Burkhart retired from the Shop Plant at Wheelabrator, Mishawaka, Ind., after 30 years of service Then, following 13 years of employment with the South Bend Tribune, he retired on June 12, 1998.

He was born on June 5, 1923, in South Bend, to Carl Edward and Bertha (Niemann) Burkhart, and was a lifelong area resident.

On June 12, 1948, in Mishawaka, Ind., he married Regina Lucille Gooley, who preceded him in death on Oct. 27, 1999. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lucille O'Keefe in 1999.

Mr. Burkhart is survived by two daughters, Sharon K. (Richard) Davis of Wilmington, N.C., and Patricia Ann "Pat" Salyer of South Bend; a son, Robert E. Burkhart of Mishawaka; and by a grandson, Justin Salyer.

Mr. Burkhart was a member of St. Anthony dePadua Catholic Church, 2120 E. Jefferson, South Bend, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002. Rev. Terry Fisher will officiate.

Interment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.

The family will receive friends from 2: to 7 p.m. Sunday in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend.
