Rev. Thomas E. Burke CSC, 78, who taught English at the University of Notre Dame for 30 years and was well known for his poems, died at 5 a.m. today in Holy Cross House at Notre Dame. He was born Sept. 23, 1885 in Chicago. He attended Columbkill School in Chicago, and the Notre Dame Preparatory School. In September 1899 he entered the Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame; receiving the habit in July 1903; and making his final profession of vows in December 1906. He received his bachelors degree from Notre Dame in 1907. He studied at Holy Cross College, Washington DC; and was ordained on June 30, 1911 at Sacred Heart Church on the Notre Dame campus. From 1921 to 1929 he taught at the University of Portland in Oregon. Retiring in 1959 he had spent 30 years as an English teacher, prefect and as an author for the Ave Maria magazine. He had resided at Holy Cross House since 1961.

 

Friends may call after 1 p.m. today in the Corby Hall Chapel on the campus, where the Office of the Dead will be recited at 5 p.m. Friday. Services will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Church at Notre Dame, with burial in Community Cemetery on the campus.
