J.W. Buford, 74, of Osage Lake Drive, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away following a courageous fight with cancer at 4:10 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. He was born on July 5, 1926, in Manila, Ark., to John William Buford and Lillie Mae Gatlin Buford, who preceded him in death. J.W. was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Buford; and by a sister, Oline Skinner.
On June 23, 1947, he married the former Virgie Lowery in Blytheville, Ark. She survives with their children, Carol and Larry Sanders, Jim and Deborah Buford, Rose and Mike Horvath, Allen and Deb Buford, and John and Diane Buford. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Lilamae Buford, and her children, Linda, Doug and Ed; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Buford was a member of the American Legion and a veteran of World War II. He was retired from the White Farm Equipment Company of South Bend in 1991 after 29 years of service.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka, where friends were received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.on Wednesday, and will also be received from one hour prior to the funeral service today. Burial will follow the services today at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
