Mrs. Vera Bruggner

Mrs. Vera Bruggner, 90, of Monticello, Fla., widow of former South Bend Mayor Frank Bruggner, died at 5 a.m. Sunday in the Isle of Rest Nursing Home, Monticello, after a year’s illness.

Her husband had served as mayor from 1960 to 1964.  A Democrat and former city controller, he became mayor when the Mayor Edward F. (Babe) was killed in an auto accident.

Born on July 24, 1886, in Wakarusa, Mrs. Bruggner had lived in Monticello for a year since moving from Knoxville, Tenn.  On Nov. 26, 1925, as Vera she married Bruggner, who died on Oct. 14, 1972.  Surviving are four grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. C. C. of Newton, Mass.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Forest G. Hay and Son Funeral Home, 1201 S. Michigan.  Rev. Roy T. pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, will officiate.  Entombment will be in Riverview Mausoleum.  Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Hay and Son Funeral Home, 1201 S. Michigan.  Rev. Roy T. Eaton, pastor of the Faith United Methodist Church, will officiate.  Entombment will be in Riverview Mausoleum.  Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home.  Mrs. Bruggner had lived with her daughter-in-law until moving to Florida five months ago.  As Vera Berkey Schamel, she married Frank Bruggner, on Nov. 26, 1925.  He died Oct. 14, 1972.

 

Editor: Her maiden name was Vera Berkey, and she married Walter Schuyler Schamel in 1903. He died in 1914.
