John A. Brown
Nov. 7, 1921 - April 6, 1999
John A. Brown, 77, of Craig Road,
South Bend, Ind., passed away after an illness at 12:15 a.m. on
Tuesday, April 6, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center. He
was born on Nov. 7, 1921, in Saginaw, Mich., to Jay M. and Ethel
Mae (Uren) Brown, and lived in this area since 1953,
coming from Pontiac, Mich. Mr. Brown retired in 1991 from
Michiana News Service of Niles where he was the manager after 16
years of service. He had been in the publisher distribution
business for over 50 years.
On May 27, 1948, in St. Andrew's Church in
Saginaw, Mich., he married Audrey G. Gillespie, who
survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Jenny (Dan) McBride
of Westville, Ind.; a grandson, Sean McBride; a sister, Sister
Mary Timothy, R.S.M., of Farmington Hills, Mich.; and two
brothers, James R. ''Bill'' Brown of Midland, Mich., and Thomas
J. (Pat) Brown of West Bloomfield, Mich.; and by many nieces and
nephews.
Mr. Brown was a World War II Army veteran, a
lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Ave Maria Council
5521, a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge 235, a member of the
University Club, Notre Dame, St. Jude Catholic Church, the
Usher's Club, and was a member of American Legion Post 161. John
was an avid golfer and Notre Dame football fan.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and
6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 1827 E.
Ireland Road, where a parish Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday in St. Jude Catholic
Church. Burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Chapin Street Clinic.
