Rev. Lawrence V. Broughal CSC, 80, a
priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross for more than 51 years,
died Saturday at the University of Notre Dame. He taught English
and philosophy at Notre Dame from 1920 to 1951 and then served as
chaplain at Our Lady of Princeton Novitiate in Princeton, NJ, and
an institution of the Medical Mission Sisters In Mountain View,
Calif., before returning to Notre Dame in 1954. Born June 11,
1876 in County Kildare, Ireland, he entered the Canadian province
of the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1902 and was ordained two
years later in Catham, New Brunswick, Canada. In the early years
he was a faculty member of St. Joseph University College in New
Brunswick and St. Laurent College in Montreal. He received his
masters degree at Quebec Naval University in 1920 and joined the
Notre Dame faculty soon afterward. A former moderator of the
Scholastic at Notre Dame, he supervised the redecoration of
Sacred Heart Church on the campus in 1931.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. Sunday at
Corby Hall on the campus. The Office of the Dead will be recited
at 5 p.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Church. Funeral services will be
held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the church.
