Roy David Britton

Mr. Roy David Britton, 84, dear husband and brother, who resided on West Hamilton Street, South Bend, Ind., departed this life following an extended illness at 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, in the Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. On Sept. 21, 1914, in Beamis, Tenn., Roy was born to the union of Bob and Mamie (Croom) Britton. Coming from Jackson, Tenn., he moved to South Bend 54 years ago. In 1942 he was inducted into the United States Army, and was honorably discharged in 1946 after serving an overseas tour of duty during World War II. At the time of his discharge he received the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three bronze stars.

 

On Aug. 30, 1947, in South Bend, he married Cordelia Mahone. To their union one son was born, Romeo David Britton, who passed away in 1991. Mr. Britton retired from the U.S. Steel Company in Gary, Ind., after 31 years of employment. He was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church where he served on the deacons board for 43 years, and he was also a member of St. Peter's Lodge 31, Free and Accepted Masons of P.H.A. Loving family members who will cherish his memory include his wife, Cordelia; and two sisters, Callie Britton of Chicago, Ill., and Mamie Manuel of Jackson.

 

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the Pilgrim Baptist Church, with Reverend H. Gregory Haygood officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday in Alford's Mortuary, to which arrangements have been entrusted. St. Peter's Lodge will conduct services at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home.
