Helen S. Bricker, 92, died on Friday,
Jan. 5, in the Fountainview Nursing Home. She formerly resided on
Rue Renoir, South Bend, Ind. She is survived by two children,
Barbara King of South Bend and Roger Bricker of
Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren, Melissa
"Missy" King and Christopher King, both of South Bend,
and Laura "Beth" Bricker of Indianapolis. She is also
survived by three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Grant Steele
of Walkerton, Ind., and Paul Steele of Plymouth, Ind.; and by a
sister, Mary Ellen Vaughn of South Bend.
Helen was born on Aug. 25, 1908, in North
Liberty, Ind., to Lafayette and Una (Cripe) Steele. She
was a graduate of North Liberty High School, class of 1926. Helen
attended Manchester College where she earned a Normal Degree in
1929, and taught school in rural St. Joseph County for nine years
prior to her marriage.
On Sept. 4, 1937, she married Henry Willis
Bricker of Walkerton in Pittsburg, Ind. They raised their family
in Cleveland, Ohio. She taught for nine years as a substitute,
then full time in Cleveland Public Schools, retiring in 1968. She
returned to South Bend in 1971. Helen was a member of the Retired
Teachers Association, and the Crest Manor Church of the Brethren
where she was active in the Women's Fellowship.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
on Monday, Jan. 8, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home,
3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Officiating will be the Rev.
Larry Fourman of the Crest Manor Church of the Brethren. Burial
will take place at Eastlawn Cemetery in North Liberty.
Visitation for Mrs. Bricker will be held
from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 7, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel
Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials be made to the
Crest Manor Church of the Brethren or to Hospice of St. Joseph
County.
