GRANGER - Bernard Francis Brehl Jr., 90, passed away on Tuesday,
July 13th, in Dujarie House at Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame.
Bernard was born on Oct. 30, 1919, in Washington, PA, to Bernard
F. "Ben" Brehl and Marietta (Arthurs) Brehl. He was a
1938 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School, Washington,
PA, and graduated in 1942 from the University of Notre Dame with
a degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the United
States Navy in World War II aboard the U.S.S. Gary in the Pacific
Theater of Operations. His first career was with the General
Electric Corporation where he worked at plants in Pittsfield, MA;
Syracuse, NY; Cincinnati, OH; and Coshocton, OH, before retiring
from the Coshocton plant as Vice President of Sales and Marketing
in 1970. He went on to work a second career as the Vice President
of Promotional Sales at Novelty Advertising, Inc., in Coshocton,
Ohio. He retired in 1991 at age 72. Bernard was an active member
of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coshocton for over 50 years,
where he served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and member of
the parish council for many years. He was currently a member of
Sacred Heart Parish at Notre Dame and served as a lector and
Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph Chapel at Holy Cross College.
He belonged to the Coshocton Kiwanis Club, the Coshocton Elks
Lodge, the American Legion and was a longtime volunteer for the
Muskingum Valley Boy Scout Council, which recognized his service
with the Silver Beaver Award. In addition, he volunteered for
many years with area organizations including the United Way and
Hospice, and chaired local fundraising for the Cancer Society.
Bernard had also worked as a volunteer tour guide at the Basilica
of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame. He had a passion for golf and
was a longtime member of the Coshocton Town & Country Club
and P.G.A. (Pathetic Golf Association) which played at the Burke
Golf Course at Notre Dame on Tuesday mornings. Bernard was
married for 57 years to Ellen M. O'Leary Brehl, who preceded him
in death on June 19, 2000. On July 9, 2004, he married Mary
Carmola Brehl, who was his joy and constant companion for the
last six years. Bernard is survived by his loving wife, Mary
Carmola Brehl of Granger; his children, Bernard F. (Jeanie) of
Kingsport, TN, Robert J. of Frederick, MD, John P. (Jane) of
Murfreesboro, TN, Thomas R. (Paula) of Geneva, OH, Stephen V.
(Marianne) of New City, NY, and Mary Ellen (Robert) Given of
Coshocton, OH; son-in-law Kevin Corcoran of St. Louis, MO;
stepchildren, Susanne (Richard) Seall of South Bend, Christianne
(Brian) McSweeney of Alexandria, VA, Larry Carmola of South Bend
and Michael (Michelle) Carmola of Granger. He is also survived by
grandchildren, Amy, Mark (Gloria), Vanessa (Jeff), Tisha, Charity
(Austin), Joe, Nick, Becky, Genevieve, Julia, Megan, Matt, Casey
(Katie), Molly, Bill, Emily and Connor; great-grandchildren,
step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He is also
survived by his brothers, Larry (Dorothy), Allison Park, PA, and
James William (Dawn), Stillwater, MN; and sisters, Kitty
(Richard) Yancosek, Pittsburgh, PA, and Marjorie Brehl,
Minnetonka, MN; and sister-in-law, Sandy Brehl, Deer Park, NY; as
well as many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his
parents and his wife, Ellen, Bernard was preceded in death by his
daughter, Katherine Brehl Corcoran; daughter-in-law, Deirdre
Brehl; grandson, David Daniels; sisters, Betty Brehl and Mary
Louise Finley; and brothers, Jack, Richard and Robert Brehl.
There will be a visitation from 2 to 3 p.m. today, July 15th, in
the Holy Cross Church at Notre Dame followed by a funeral Mass
for Bernard at 3 p.m. Burial will follow at a later date at
Roscoe Cemetery in Coshocton, OH. To send condolences, please
