Rev. Joseph M. Brannigan CSC, 73,
died at 6:20 a.m. today in St. Joseph Hospital where he had
recently undergone surgery and had suffered a heart attack. Born
Aug. 1, 1895 in Hudson, Mich. he entered the Novitiate of the
Congregation of Holy Cross Oct. 5, 1919; made his final
profession of vows Oct. 6, 1923; and was ordained to the
priesthood June 24, 1927. Through the years he had a number of
pastoral and teaching assignments. He served as assistant pastor
at St. Joseph Church, South Bend from 1927 to 1932, and on three
occasions he served as either pastor or chaplain at St. Joseph
Farm, Granger, from 1934 to 1937, from 1941 to 1946, and again
from 1959 to 1965. He had taught also at Notre Dame in the
department of religion; was stationed twice in New Orleans, as
parish assistant and as a high school chaplain. He was also a
chaplain at St. Charles Boys Home in Milwaukee; a chaplain at
Sacred Heart College, Watertown, Wis.; and was at one time an
assistant at St. Mars Parish in Austin, Texas. Since his
retirement in 1965 he has been residing at Holy Cross House on
the Notre Dame campus.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday in Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame, where the Office of the Dead and the funeral mass will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Community Cemetery on the campus.
