Fr. (Gordon) James Brady, C.S.C., 72, died peacefully on Friday December 23, in Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, IN.
Fr. Brady was born on January 1, 1933, in Grand Rapids, MI to Gordon and Catherine (Cook) Brady. He attended St. Francis Xavier grade school and then Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids, MI.
Upon graduating from high school he entered Notre Dame in September of 1951. On August 15, 1952 he received the habit at Sacred Heart Novitiate, in Jordan, MN. One year and one day later, August 16, 1953 he professed vows in Holy Cross.
He returned to Notre Dame to finish studies and graduated with a degree in philosophy in 1956. Fr. Brady studied theology in Rome and received his S.T.B. in theology from the Gregorian University in 1959. On November 29, 1959, he was ordained to the priesthood in Rome, Italy.
His first assignment was as pastoral assistant at Notre Dame from 1961 to 1962. The next year he was assigned at the University of Portland where he taught, counseled, consoled and ministered to the students until 1971.
For the next two years he was campus minister at the Oregon College of Education in Portland before moving to Independence, OR as pastor of St. Patrick parish. In 1983 he moved to Fountain, CO as pastor of St. Joseph Parish.
Thirteen years later, in 1996, he moved back to reside at the University of Portland while working for the Archdiocese in parochial ministry. In 1998 he became pastor of St. Mary Parish in Aumsville, OR. until poor health made it necessary for him to come to Holy Cross House at Notre Dame last November.
Fr. Brady was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Catherine Brady, and a sister Marilyn. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and June Brady, and five nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be held for Fr. Brady in the Chapel of Moreau Seminary, University of Notre Dame, on Tuesday December 27, from 3:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame, on Wednesday December 28, at 9:30 a.m. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
