Leland H. "Lee" Brady, 79, of Mishawaka, Ind., passed away early Friday morning, Jan. 2, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. He was born April 9, 1924, in Huntington Park, Calif., a son of Leland and Huldah (Hobart) Brady. Lee came to Mishawaka with his family in 1930 and graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1942. He then served his country in the U.S. Navy for over three years during World War II.
On Aug. 17, 1946, Lee married the former Ruth Ann Futterknecht, and they made their home in Mishawaka. Lee was employed for 31 years with the United States Postal Service. and at the time of his retirement in 1983 was the postmaster in Osceola, Ind. He was a life member of VFW #360. Other memberships included American Legion #161, NARFE, FOP #155, and NAPUS. Lee was a former member of the Elks #451 and the De Amicis Club. He enjoyed playing euchre, and at one time was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Lee's surviving family includes his daughter, Lee Ann (Michael Sr.) Thornton of Mishawaka; a brother, William (Shirley) Brady of South Bend; two grandchildren, Michele (Nicholas) Hartley of Mishawaka and Shawn Thornton of Mishawaka; five great-grandchildren, Kirstie, Darian and Kayla Hartley, Patrick Romeo and Christopher Thornton; and a granddaughter-in-law, Toni Thornton.
Lee was preceded in death by his wife in 1990, and by a grandson, Michael Thornton Jr. in 2003.
Friends may spend time with Lee's family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday in the Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. Third St., Mishawaka. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home chapel. Burial with military honors will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
