GRANGER - J.R. "Dick" Boulis, 86, Granger, IN, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, in Saint Joe Hospital, Mishawaka, IN. Dick was born on a farm near Owosso, Michigan, on August 24, 1923, to John L. and Revah C. Boulis. Dick was in the Naval Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. After leaving the military, he worked in Atlanta, Georgia, before returning to Michigan State where he graduated in 1950. After college, he began his business career and moved between various companies in Louisville, KY, Geneva, IL, Los Angeles, CA, and South Bend, IN, where he was ultimately named president of South Bend Lathe on January 1, 1970. Under his leadership, South Bend Lathe became one of the first companies where the stock was 100% employee-owned; additionally, it created a $5 million grant to the City of South Bend to be used for other business development in cooperation with the then-current mayor, Jerry Miller. Upon retirement, Dick continued to reside in Granger where he loved to fish and hunt, taking several trips with sons and grandsons to Northern Canada. Dick loved vacationing with his wife to many places; he loved to travel. He is survived by his loving wife, Iris; and his children, Rick (Patricia) Boulis (Ruthledge, GA), Rob (Pat) Boulis (Portage, MI), Kathy (Jeff) Guy (South Bend, IN), Leroy (Mary) Castle (Indianapolis, IN) and Tom (Cathy) Castle (Three River, MI). He is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his sister, Bonnie Osborn (Ypsilanti, MI); and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at noon with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 7th, in Bubb Funeral Home, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, IN. Rev. James Pitts, Westminster Presbyterian Church, will officiate. A graveside service will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Three Rivers, MI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, South Bend, IN.
