Marguerite Eugenia (Spalding) Bonjorno, 84, of Portland, Ore., formerly of South Bend, Ind., passed away after a long illness on Friday, Aug. 25, in her daughter Sandra's and her son-in-law Robert's home. She was born in Jefferson Township, Cass County, Mich., on Nov. 30, 1915, to Goldie Grace (Elkins) and Claude Eugene Spalding, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her sisters, Mable Wilds and Mildred Weed; her brothers, Max and Donald; and by her first husband, George M. Denyes. Marguerite is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Denyes) Diedrich, and son-in-law, Robert H. Diedrich; her brothers, Russell Spalding, Lowell H. Spalding and Bob W. Spalding; sisters-in-law, Johann Spalding, Rose Spalding and Wanita Spalding; and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Marguerite graduated from Cassopolis High School in 1934. She retired in 1974 from the University of Notre Dame where she worked in the student infirmary. She then joined her daughter and son-in-law in Oregon for the remainder of her years. She was a life member of the DAV Auxiliary Chapter 20 in Adrian, Mich.
Visitation at 10 a.m. (Ind. time) will be followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. (Ind. time) on Thursday, Sept. 7, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, with burial at Highland Cemetery.
Family and friends will gather at the American Legion Post 357, 5414 W. Sample Street, South Bend, for a luncheon, and for sharing of memories represented in Marguerite's collection of historic family photos and family scrapbook memorabilia.
