Peter was born in Thorpe, Wisconsin, and grew up in the lumbering town of Rib Lake, Wisconsin. He enjoyed sports and the outdoors of northern Wisconsin, often playing hooky from school in order to work as a lumberjack to bring in extra money for his family during The Depression. When Pearl Harbor was bombed he signed up for duty in the military and served in the Coast Guard/Navy on the LCI (Landing Craft Infantry). He saw action during the invasion of Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy. He was wounded in action during the D-Day invasion and was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war Peter remained on duty with the Coast Guard and married Bridget C. Coyne on October 28, 1944, in Chicago, IL. Bridget preceded him in death on March 16, 2007. After his retirement in 1982 they moved to Mishawaka to be near family. He enjoyed his family, the St. Joseph river, and Notre Dame football.
