Sister Mary Gertruden Bissell CSC

Sister Mary Gertruden CSC, 87, died Sunday in the Holy Cross Convent on the St. Mary’s campus. The former Mary Helen Bissell, she was born in Scottsville NY, in 1877. She received her early education in Scottsville and entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1905. She received the habit the same year and made her profession of vows in 1907. She then completed registered nurses training, specializing in X-ray technology. During her community life she was stationed at St. Joseph Hospital in South Bend; Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City; Our Saviour’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Ill.; and Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to her retirement in 1957, she spent 10 years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Cairo, Ill.

Friends may call in the St. Mary’s Convent parlor. A requiem high mass will be offered at 6 a.m.  Wednesday in the Church of Loretto at St. Mary’s  with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery at 8:30 a.m.
