Nicholas Bickel

Nicholas Bickel, age 83, died almost instantly Sunday night at 8 o’clock of a fractured skull when he fell down the cellar steps at this home, 503 East Jefferson boulevard.  He had been a resident of Mishawaka for 65 years.

Mr. Bickel was alone at the time of the accident.  His daughter, Mrs. Ralph Howland, found his body at the foot of the stairway when she returned from a church bazaar.  It is believed that Mr. Bickel became subject to a heart attack while descending the stairs or mistook the doorway for one leading outside the house.

He was born Dec, 6, 1847 in Baden, Germany, and moved to Mishawaka 65 years ago.  On Aug, 19, 1872, he was married to Barbara Raab in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic church:  she died 13 years ago.

Six sons and one daughter survive;  they are Joseph Bickel, city, Henry Bickel, Dowagiac, Mich.;  Frank, George Otto and Nicholas Bickel, all of Marcellus, Mich., and Mrs. Ralph Howland, Mishawaka.  He leaves 35 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed in the residence until the hour of service, which will be held from St Monica’s Roman Catholic church Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock.  Rev. Anthony Badina will officiate and burial will be made in St. Joseph’s cemetery.  Mr. Bickel was a member of St. Joseph’s society and the Holy Name society.
