Mr. Frank Berzai Jr., 89, of South Albert Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at 1 a.m. Thursday, May 9, in the Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Berzai was born on Jan. 10, 1913, in South Bend, and was a lifetime resident of the Michiana area.
On Nov. 26, 1936, in South Bend, he married the former Teresa K. Foldesi, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Sheila R. (Carl) Berta of South Bend; a son; Donald F. Berzai of Bristol, Ind.; a sister, Irene Davis of Merrillville, Ind.; and by two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren whom he loved and cherished.
Mr. Berzai retired in 1976 from the St. Joseph County Police Department after many years of service. Frank worked as an administrator in the civil office at the county police. Mr. Berzai was a member of County Police FOP Lodge #155, Ardmore Lions Club, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 5577 and was a 4th Degree Knight.
Frank will not only be missed by his family who loved him, but also by numerous law enforcement officers, church family, and all who knew him. He was a dedicated family man, who loved and cherished his wife of 65 years and his children and grandchildren. Mr. Berzai was a great servant to the church and citizens of St. Joseph County.
Mr. Berzai was a US Navy veteran serving during World War II, and was very proud of his service to this great country.
Their will be no visitation hours.
A memorial Mass will be said at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18th, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 309 S. Taylor Street, South Bend. Officiating will be the Rev. Richard A. Laurick, CSC. Burial will take place at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
The family request that all memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Northern Indiana Chapter, 108 North Main Street, Suite 707, South Bend, IN 46601-1236.
The HANLEY and Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend, handled arrangements and services and extends deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Berzai family.
