SOUTH BEND - Wesley C. Bender, 87, of
Juniper Road, died at 12:55 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Medical
Center after an illness. Mr. Bender retired in 1973 as professor
emeritus from the University of Notre Dame after 42 years of
service, where he was the founder of the marketing department in
the College of Business. He was born Aug. 8, 1908, in Brooklyn,
N.Y., and had lived in South Bend since 1931.
On Dec. 30, 1933, in Templeton, Pa., he
married Genevieve Rebolt. She survives with two daughters,
Marilyn Meyer of New York City and Alane Singleton
of Grand Haven. He was a former member of American Institute of
Banking; Association of Credit Men; former manager of Northern
Indiana Adjustment Bureau, serving as secretary of St. Joseph
Valley Chapter; former member of American Economic Association;
American Marketing Association, and director of the Michiana
Chapter, American Association of University Professors; Michigan
World Trade Club; past president and vice president of Indiana
Academy of Social Sciences; former director of South Bend Civic
Music Association; former editor of Credto, a monthly publication
of St. Joseph Valley Chapter of the National Association of
Credit Men, and founder and former editor of the Notre Dame World
Trade Conference Papers. He was a graduate of Cornell University,
the University of Pittsburgh, Northwestern University, and
Columbia University.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sacred
Heart Basilica. Friends may call one hour before services on
Monday in the church. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley C.
