Rev. George P Benaglia CSC, 76, died Sunday
at Holy Cross House on the campus of the University of Notre Dame
where he was living in retirement. He was a member of the Eastern
Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross. He was born Feb. 23,
1906 in Tauton, Mass., and attended the high school seminary at
Notre Dame, taking his first vows in 1923. He graduated from the
University of Notre Dame in 1928 and made his perpetual vows the
same year. After furthering his theological studies at Holy Cross
College, Washington DC, he was ordained to the priesthood on Feb.
24, 1933 at St. Marys Church, Baltimore, Md. He then
continued studies for a masters degree in the classics at
Washington DCs Catholic University.
Father Benaglia was instrumental in founding
the Eastern Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross and spent
the years from 1935 to 1955 at North Easton, Mass. He also taught
for many years in the seminary of Our Lady of Holy Cross. In 1948
he became the first president of Stonehill College in North
Easton and from 1949 to 1959 he continued at Stonehill as
vice-president. He later served as president of King'
College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. from 1955 to 1964. After a
sabbatical year in Rome he moved to Arizona and served as
chaplain at the University of Arizonas Newman Club.
Retiring in 1972 he moved to Cocoa Beach, Fla. where he remained
until 1980 when he moved to Holy Cross House, Notre Dame.
Services will be at Stonehill College Chapel
in North Easton. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m.
Thursday in the Holy Cross House Chapel at Notre Dame.
