Rev. Philip V. Beagham CSC, 86, of Holy Cross House, University of Notre Dame, died there Tuesday after a lengthy illness. He was born May, 4, 1896 in Cantrall, Ill., and entered Holy Cross Seminary, Notre Dame, in 1913. Graduating from Notre Dame in 1919, he made his first profession of vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross on Sept. 9, 1920. After theological studies at Holy Cross College in Washington, DC, he was ordained to the priesthood on June 27, 1924, in Sacred Heart Church at the University of Notre Dame. He served largely in parochial ministry, except from 1928 to 1930 when he taught at Notre Dame. He was assistant pastor at St. Mary’s in Austin, Tex., from 1924 to 1925 , at Sacred Heart Parish, New Orleans, from 1925 to 1927, 1930 to 1934 and again from 1967 to 1977, and at St. Mary’s Parish in Henderson, Ky., from 1927 to 1928.

 

He also served as chaplain at the Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo from 1952 to 1967 and was pastor of South Bend’s Holy Cross Catholic Church from 1934 to 1946 and St. Joseph Catholic Church from 1946 to 1952. In 1974 he celebrated 50 years as a priest, and in 1977 he retired to Holy Cross House.

 

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Notre Dame. Rev. William T. Craddick CSC, will officiate and deliver the homily. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. today at Moreau Seminary Chapel, Notre Dame, where a wake prayer service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today Rev. William P. Melody CSC will officiate, and Rev. Stanley J. Rdzok CSC will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in Community Cemetery, Notre Dame. Father Beaghan is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Helen Chambers, Mrs. Mary Luzenberg and Mrs. Josephine Peifer, all of Springfield, Ill. The Hickey Funeral Homes is handling arrangements.
