Martha W. Bauwens, 88, of West 7th Street, Mishawaka, Ind., died after an illness on Monday afternoon, Jan. 17, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind. Martha was born on Jan. 20, 1911, in North Judson, Ind., to John and Veronica (Brink) Wincek. In 1948 Martha married Edward Bauwens, who preceded her in death on March 11, 1982. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by two daughters, Nicki Bauwens of Mishawaka, with whom she lived, and Patricia Primmer of South Bend; two grandsons, John Edward and Adam Primmer, both of South Bend; a sister, Agnes Fritz of South Bend; her dog, Buster; and by a close friend, Kathleen Robertson. Martha had owned and operated Bauwens' Grocery Store in South Bend from 1955 to 1973. She also worked as a clerk at Cook's Department Store from 1962 to 1976.
Martha was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend. A funeral Mass for Martha A. Bauwens will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, in St. Matthew Cathedral, with Bishop Daniel R. Jenky officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Visitations will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. on Friday.
