Edith J. Bauerlein, 95, of St. Paul's Retirement Community, passed away at 3:55 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, in St. Paul's.
Miss Bauerlein was born on Dec. 20, 1902, in the Bauerlein family home on Lincolnway East in Mishawaka, Ind., where she lived her entire life until recently.
In 1925, she graduated from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Ind., where she worked at the college as a professor in the Education Department. In 1939, she earned a master's degree from Teacher's College at Columbia University, N.Y. She continued her studies at the University of Notre Dame, Oxford College in England, and the University of Chicago.
She was a world traveler, making her first trip to Europe by ship in 1938. She continued to travel beginning in 1963, when she became a participant in Education Field Trips and Seminars under the direction of Dr. Gerald Read of Kent State University, Ohio, visiting countries on every continent to study the education and culture of those areas.
Miss Bauerlein was a teacher in the South Bend Community School Corporation for 40 years, retiring in 1968. In 1969, she organized the library at St. Joseph Parish School in Mishawaka, and served as a volunteer there, for 10 years.
Miss Bauerlein was a member of St. Mary's Alumnae Association and was the recipient of the Alumnae Associations highest honor, The Distinguished Alumna Award, during the Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1994. She was a founding member of the Mother Pauline Society and has endowed two scholarships, one in memory of her mother, Rose Bauerlein, and one in honor of Sr. Magdala Judge, C.S.C. of St. Mary's.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka, the Rosary Society of the church, Christ Child Society, Secular Franciscans, the Daughters of Isabella, serving as State Regent for two years, Retired Teachers, Harvest House, The Theresians, St. Joseph Community Hospital Auxiliary and Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Rosemarie Lindahl of Atlanta and Mrs. Betty Thomas of North Carolina; two nephews, John C. Moore of Mishawaka and Eugene J. Bauerlein of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and by several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Moore and Anna C. Bauerlein; a brother, Eugene J. Bauerlein; and by her parents, Charles and Rose Bauerlein.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday in Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, Mishawaka, where a Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Rev. Robert A. Yast officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mishawaka.
