James R. Bateman

James R. Bateman, 86, of Tanglewood Lane, Mishawaka, Ind., died at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, in Regency Place of South Bend. He was born in East Chicago, Ind., on Feb. 14, 1915. Mr. Bateman was preceded in death by his parents, George H. and Mamie (McWhorter) Bateman; and by his brother, Charles Bateman.
Mr. Bateman married the former Mildred C. Ball on June 13, 1942, in the Thorndyke-Hilton Chapel on the University of Chicago campus in Chicago., Ill. She survives. He is also survived by their son, Douglas C. Bateman, DDS, and his wife, Catherine of Granger, Ind.; and by two grandchildren, Jeffrey Bateman and his wife, Nicole of Granger, and Lori Bateman of Boston, Mass.
James was a retired metallurgist having started his career at Inland Steel and continuing it with Standard Forgings in East Chicago, Ill. He graduated from Purdue University in 1938 as a chemical engineer. James was a fifty-year member of the Indiana Harbor Masonic Lodge #686 and the Scottish Rite of South Bend. He was very active in the Shrine, holding various offices with the Chanters Choral Group. He was also a member of the Elks and Moose Lodges. During his retirement he started and directed several choral groups in Fort Myers, Fla.
Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main Street, Mishawaka, where a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., with Rev. Larry and Bonnie Whiteford officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60707.
