SOUTH BEND - Katherine Bassett, 81, of Donmoyer Avenue, died at 5:40 p.m. Monday in her home after an illness. Mrs. Bassett was a private duty children's nurse. She was born July 4, 1913, in Monmouth, N.J., and moved to South Bend in 1981.

On Sept.4, 1937, in New York City, as Katherine Howland, she married Walter Bassett. He survives with two daughters, Jill C. Bassett of Schenectady, N.Y., and Marilynn L. Livrone of South Bend; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was a Girl Scout leader for more than 20 years and a Community Services volunteer.

Private services were held today in Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home. Cremation will take place, with burial in Barrett Ballard Memorial Garden at Red Mills Baptist Church, Mahopac, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to Visiting Nurse Association or Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc.
