Marilyn A. Bartkowiak, age 65, passed
away Nov. 17, 2003, at North Broward Hospital following a brief
illness. Marilyn was born in East Chicago, Illinois, to Joseph
and Gertrude Bartkowiak. She grew up in South Bend, Indiana, and
moved to Florida in 1960 where she began a career with the
Broward County School Board. She was a graduate of Ball State
University and earned a Master's Degree from Florida Atlantic
University. Marilyn was an educator at Deerfield Beach Middle and
High Schools, teaching physical education, business, and typing
classes. While at these schools she became Broward county's first
female Athletic Director. She truly loved her athletics and was
well-respected and loved by all her students. She finished her
career of thirty years as Assistant Principal at several high
schools including Taravella, Northeast, Coral Springs and
Deerfield Beach. She was fondly known by all her students as
"Miss B."
After retirement Marilyn began a part-time
job/hobby working in the Supervisor of Elections office. She had
worked in this office until a week before her death and truly
enjoyed it.
She is survived by her loving father, Joseph
J. Bartkowiak of South Bend, IN; her sisters, Patricia Carter
of Ft. Lauderdale and Judy (Dick) Monjeau of Niles, MI.
Also survived by her brothers, James (Mickey) Bartkowiak of
Margate, Fla., and Michael Bartkowiak of Mishawaka, IN. Marilyn
will be greatly missed by her pride and joy, 15 nieces and
nephews and 15 great-nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 22, 2003, in Holy Cross Church.
Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 4
until 8 p.m. Friday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix
Drive, where a parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m.
