Mr. Joseph Nathan Barnes Jr., 50, dear father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle who resided on South Carroll Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, Aug. 8, in his home. He was born to the union of Joseph Nathan and Vera (Shorter) Barnes Sr. in South Bend on July 29, 1950. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Nathan Barnes Sr., and by a nephew, Derrick Scaggs.
Joseph served in the United States Army, and returned to South Bend where he resided until his death. He was employed by Goodwill Industries. His favorite pastime was fishing. Mr. Barnes is survived by a son, Joseph Nathan Archibald of Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Vera L. Barnes of Chicago; three sisters, Lena Eaton of South Bend, Laurella Scaggs and Valerie Barnes, both of Chicago; two brothers, Craig Barnes of South Bend and Curtis Barnes of Chicago; six nieces, Stephanie (Daniel) Hunt, Coehama (Micah) Lipscomb, Latoya Scaggs, Anita Jones, Monique Jones and Trina Barnes; three nephews, Craig Fletcher Jr., Aurileas Cannady and Russell Scaggs; 13 great-nieces and nephews; and by a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, in Alford's Mortuary. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call one hour before the services in Alford's Mortuary, where arrangements have been entrusted.
