SOUTH BEND - Joseph Barnes, 73, of 1138 Chalfant St., died at 1:56 a.m. Sunday in his home after an illness. Mr. Barnes was a former cement finisher. He was born May 31, 1920, in Brownsville, Tenn., and lived in South Bend since 1946, coming from Louisville, Ky.

In 1947, in South Bend, he married Grace Black. She survives, with a daughter, Louise Harris of Milwaukee; three sons, Jesse, Joseph Jr., and Michael, all of South Bend; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, James Parker of South Bend; and a stepsister, Annie Lou Taylor of Boston.

He was a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Services will be at noon Thursday in the church. Friends may call one hour before services in the funeral home. Alford's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
