Grace Barnes

On the evening of Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at 9:30 a.m. in Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, our dear mother and grandmother was called home. Mrs. Grace Barnes was 80 years of age. Grace, daughter of the late Richard and Cora (Jones) Black, was born in Eudora, Arkansas, on November 12, 1925.
She moved to South Bend in 1942, coming from Benton Harbor, Michigan. After moving to South Bend she met Joseph Barnes and in 1946 they were united in marriage. Mrs. Barnes, a resident of Chalfant Street, was employed for many years by Ziker Cleaners; she later worked for Memorial Hospital in environmental services where she retired from in 1988 following 12 years of service. Also, she was a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Mothers Board.
Loving family members who survive include three sons, Jesse (Mary) Barnes Sr., Joseph (Connie) Barnes Jr. and Michael (Carol) Barnes, all of South Bend; and 13 grandchildren, Joseph III, Yusel, Kwame, KaMaria, Michae'la, Michelle, Bakari, Rashida, JoAnna, Rakim, Jesse Jr., Angela and Kwsai; along with a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and other family members and friends.
Preceding her in death along with her parents were her husband, Joseph Sr., and 18 siblings. Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, May 9, in Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call in the church one hour prior to the services.
