Ethel Mae Barnes, 75, of South Bend, formerly of Red Bank, N.J., passed away Oct. 23, 1996, in her residence after an extended illness. She resided in the South Bend area since March 1995.
Mrs. Barnes was born April 11, 1921, in Smithfield, Va., but spent her formative years in Red Bank, N.J. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Sarah J. (Drew) Holloway. On Aug. 23, 1940, she was united in marriage to Marshall Barnes.
She is survived by a daughter, Gloria Bates of South Bend; a sister, Viola Gauldin of Newark, N.J.; three grandsons, Marshall Barnes of Plainfield, N.J. and Laruen and Christopher Bates of South Bend; one great-granddaughter, Najee Barnes of Plainfield; a beloved daughter-in-law, Fleeta Barnes of Plainfield; and a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her son, Marshall K. Barnes. Mrs. Barnes was a registered nurse until her retirement.
Calling hours were held at Alford's Mortuary, South Bend, on Oct. 26, from 5 to 6 p.m. Interment will be at the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, N.J. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
