MISHAWAKA - Edith Barnes, 70, residing on East Tenth Street, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at 3:07 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, at her home. Mrs. Barnes was a former teacher at the Head Start program in North Liberty, Ind., and was employed with the janitorial services at the Scottsdale Mall Theater in South Bend for many years.
Edith was born on May 15, 1928, in Madisonville, Ky., to Roy and Mamie (Penrod) Yates. She had lived most of her life in Mishawaka. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Danny and Richard Barnes; a sister, Jean Tucker; a brother, LeRoy Yates; and by her father, Roy Yates.
On June 9, 1979, in Mishawaka, she married Cecil Barnes, who survives and resides in Truman, Ark.
She is also survived by her mother, Mamie Yates of Mishawaka; five daughters, Mary Burke of Osceola, Ind., Peggy Dover and Mickey Crider, both of Mishawaka, Victoria Burnett of Russville, Ark., and Jacqueline Morris of Walkerton, Ind.; seven sons, Joe Bucker of Mishawaka, John Bucker of South Bend, Paul Bucker of Mulberry, Ark., Raymond Barnes of Lake City, Ark., Jerry Barnes, Thomas Barnes and James Barnes, all of Mishawaka; 41 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren; and by five sisters, Margaret Greenway, Katie Greenway and Brenda Stout, all of Tennessee, Sheila Ford and Susie Johns, both of Mishawaka.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 19, at the Palmer Funeral Home, 1109 Lincoln Way West, Osceola. Brother Steve Nani, C.S.C., pastor with Hospice of St. Joseph County, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the Palmer Funeral Home, Osceola.
