John J. Barna, 80, of Aberdeen Court,
South Bend, Ind., died following a short illness at 3:45 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 22, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center. Mr.
Barna was born Aug. 15, 1921, in South Bend, to John and Anna (Takacs)
Barna, and was a lifetime area resident.
On Aug. 13, 1946, in South Bend, he married
Helen M. Kalil, who preceded him in death on Sept. 14,
1999. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and by a
brother, Ernest A. Barna. He is survived by two daughters, Janet
(Thomas) Hall of South Bend and Karen (Gregory) Petsovich
of Bridgman, Mich.; five grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Hall
of Indianapolis, Ind., and Vanessa, Wynn and Maxwell
Petsovich of Bridgman; and by one sister, DewAnn (Clarence)
Langdon of Park Ridge, Ill.
Mr. Barna retired from the Allied-Signal
Corporation in 1985 as a machine setup man after more than 40
years service. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps during World
War II, serving in the South Pacific as a technical sergeant. He
was a graduate of the Dallas Aviation School at Love Field in
Dallas, Texas, a member of the Marine Corps League, American
Legion Post #284, and was an alumni of the National Association
of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was also a member of St.
Jude Catholic Church and the VIP Group of the church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27th, in St. Jude Catholic Church, with
Rev. James Stoyle officiating. Entombment will follow at Highland
Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today in
the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, where a
prayer vigil will be held at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be
made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South
Bend, IN 46637; or to the St. Jude Building Fund, 19704 Johnson
Road, South Bend, IN 46614.
