Mae Elizabeth (Harris) Bare, 91, of
the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Carl
King Towers and Victoria Street, South Bend, Ind., died on
Tuesday morning, Jan. 5, 1999. Mae was born on March 25, 1907, in
Monticello, Ind., to Thomas Harris and Lottie Bryner
Harris, who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in
death by three brothers, Charles, James and Merle; and by a
sister, Beulah Gilsenger Fisher. On Oct. 21, 1928, she
married Wayne Harris Bare, who also preceded her in death on July
10, 1941.
She is survived by a sister, Alda (Herman) Myers
of Estero, Fla.; two sons, William (Rosemary) of South Bend and
Jerry (Gretia) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five granddaughters, Karol Snyder
and Billie Jean Catanzarite, both of South Bend, and
Debbie Williams, Becky McClellan and Margo Keagey,
all of Arizona; nine great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren; David Murphy, a special
''adopted'' grandchild; and by many friends and relatives.
Mrs. Bare was employed through the years in
a variety of positions. In 1950 she worked at Ford Hopkins
Company, from 1954-1960 at the Carlton Studio, where she helped
paint the oil portraits, and from 1960-1972 she was a clerk at
Maurek's IGA and Burger Dairy Stores. Mrs. Bare was a
long-standing member of the St. Joe County Republican Party and
worked the polls well into her 80s. She belonged to the Helena
Rebekah Lodge and the Army & Navy Ladies' Auxiliary. She was
also a member of Faith United Methodist Church, and was a
volunteer at the Broadway Christian Parish.
Friends may call from 12 to 1 p.m. today in
the McGann Funeral Home, 2313 E. Edison Road, South Bend. A
ceremony will follow visitation, with burial to follow at
Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.
