SOUTH BEND - Dorothy W. Barczykowski, 93, of South Bend, IN, died on Sunday, July 6, 2008. She was born on July 27, 1914, to the late Joseph and Lottie (Tobolski) Szumski in South Bend, and was a lifelong resident. Along with her parents, three sisters, Irene Markowski and Bridget Wujcik, both of South Bend, Harriet Froberger of Michigan, and two brothers, Al and Eugene Szumski, both of South Bend, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Barczykowski retired on August 31, 1974, from the former Bendix Corporation (which is now known as Honeywell).

On November 29, 1952, as Dorothy W. Wojciechowski, she married Harry A. Barczykowski in South Bend. He died on February 14, 2004. She is survived by one sister, Gertrude Ornat of South Bend, IN; one sister-in-law, Alice Szumski of South Bend, IN; 16 nieces and nephews, Dolores Andrzejewski, Debbie Foy, David and Michael Szumski, Steve, Allen, Wayne, Mark and Dennis Wujcik, LeRoy Ornat, Janet Kamichitis, Sue Allio, Kathy Smith, Chuck Froberger, Ronald and Tom Szumski; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Dorothy was a member of St. Hedwig Parish where she belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society. The family would like to give special thanks to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care and to the caregivers from "Your Home Assisted Living" for their loving and compassionate care that they provided for Dorothy.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 PM today, July 9, 2008, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 5 PM. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Thursday, July 10, in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care or to St. Hedwig Catholic Church.
